Hiring and Keeping Talent

Tom Brokaw’s book, The Greatest Generation, was a major best seller, and rightfully so.  Mr. Brokaw profiles a number of men and women who fought in WW II.  A common thread was courage, perseverance and hard work. Those men and women were different from our current generation, most never changing jobs or if they did, it was only once or twice.

Today’s generation is different. The courage, perseverance and hard work have not changed, witnessed by the heroism and togetherness displayed after tragedy struck New York and Washington D.C.  However, what is different is that men and women do change jobs more frequently now, and quite often.

Because of this fact, it becomes even more important for employers to keep the “good ones”.  We all know it takes an enormous amount of time and money to find, recruit and hire “talent”.  Unfortunately, too many times after a talented individual is hired, he/she is forgotten, stymied, stonewalled, or simply, mismanaged.  Then when they leave, the organization rarely discovers the real reason for the departure... “I found a better opportunity” or “I couldn’t turn down the offer”, or worse yet, “I didn’t see any future here.”

So at least two burning questions should be foremost in management’s daily thoughts…, “what can we do to keep our associates happy?” And, “do we have a career path available for them?”

Give us a call to see how we can partner with your organization when it comes to evaluating your hiring and retention practices.
